My self-summary
I'm looking for new people in my life ... I love all kinds of people. I'm a bit eccentric, and can be intellectual, or not. I'm always up for a film, coffee break, ...

I'm always rethinking everything about myself and about life, so I'm particularly open to new people, new ideas, new experiences, especially right now. I don't know where it will end -- maybe right where I started -- but I hope it's an interesting ride.

I am open minded, thoughtful, and creative.
What I’m doing with my life
On the personal side, I have three children. I love them with all my heart and they are a great joy to me. I'm in a house I'm really happy with, furnishing it slowly (very slowly). I bought a really nice Steinway grand last year; it's worth more than my car, for whatever that says about me. I play classical piano, but I also like popular music.

I have a home studio with all kinds of keyboards, synthesizers, and cool gear that I have a lot of fun with. On my down time, I like to go into my studio, flick on the switches one after the other, launch my software, crank the volume up loud enough to make my ears ring, and start improvising, or working on a song. The technology gives you amazing capabilities. I find it very intense to be in the middle of all the gear, with thousands of sounds at my disposal, all mixing and flowing in and out from one circuit to the next, LEDs flickering, numbers and waveforms whizzing by and musical forms filling up computer screens, ... it can put me in a trance. I'm in the middle of a project of writing and producing an album of music, just for fun. I do all the instruments through synthesizers, write the lyrics, and sing (well, I try anyway).
I’m really good at
I'm really good at ... Well, I'm really good at abstractions and conceptual things like math. Apart from that, I'll let other people be the judge.
The first things people usually notice about me
I don't know. I'll have to ask some time.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Way too much to collect here, so this is just a random smattering. I'm too lazy at the moment to be systematic. I especially enjoy hard edged movies, books, and music.

Movies: Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Blade Runner, Apocalypse Now, American Teen, The Machinist, + one thousand others

Books: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Oedipus Cycle, The Crying of Lot 49, Naked Lunch, Collected Poems of Wallace Stevens, ..., lots of theoretical books, lots of others, ...

Classical Music: Anything by Webern esp. Cantata no. 1, Anything by Berg esp. Violin Concerto, Mahler 9, Sibelius 5, Early Stravinsky, Boulez Le Marteau sans Maitre, ...

Popular Music: Led Zeppelin, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Robert Fripp, XTC, Jane's Addiction, Pearl Jam, ...

Food: I love all kinds of Asian cuisine, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, ..., love the best of just about any cuisine, French, Italian, ..., mmmm my mouth is watering now, ...
Six things I could never do without
Hmm. Strange question ... I don't expect to have to do without everything except six things. Here's a few things that make life interesting:

Friends and family,
Good conversation,
My books,
A laptop and an Internet connection,
A piano or electric keyboard,
I spend a lot of time thinking about
I like pondering the grand questions about life, the universe, human experience, love, beauty, truth, meaning. Everything relates back to these, even the most mundane things. My research always relates to something I find mysterious and beautiful; it captivates me when I'm in the midst of it. Otherwise, my thinking is pretty wide ranging. I don't obsess a lot about any one thing, except when I have a problem I need to solve.
On a typical Friday night I am
I don't have a Friday night thing. Sometimes I'm at home getting things done, sometimes out with friends.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
If I admit it here, it's not private anymore.

Since I love life and have a lot of ambitions for the future, I'm serious about keeping healthy and would ideally like to be with someone who is equally health conscious. I've been taking supplements and striving for a healthy diet since I was 19 years old (when my grandmother got cancer and I started considering my own mortality). I try to exercise every day, but I'm not excessive. I exercise to live, not live to exercise. I don't smoke, I drink only occasionally, I don't take drugs, and I don't have unhealthy vices. So far, I've had no serious health problems in my life and I hope to keep it that way for as long as I can. I hope to see breakthroughs in aging research and life extension in my lifetime so I can live even longer.

What I'm ideally looking for ... I don't like to make stipulations, because I'm always surprised by unexpected chemistry, and have many times met amazing people who didn't fit my preconceptions. That said, the key thing for me is synergy. A relationship should add energy and possibility to both people's lives. I have many things I still want to accomplish and I expect my best years still lie ahead. I'd like to be with someone who feels the same way and who wants a mutual partnership. My favorite poem is Alfred, Lord Tennyson's Ulysses, which I memorized in high school.

Needless to say, I am completely uninterested in any form of drama, emotional drain, or mind games -- anything that will subtract from my life rather than add to it. Also, I consider competition with a relationship partner, or being threatened by their successes, pathological and a turn off. Being in a relationship means being on the same team, taking on challenges together, not draining energy by competing with each other.

I like women ... a lot. I have positive feelings toward just about every woman I've ever dated. I enjoy good conversation. It's rare that I don't enjoy hours of interesting conversation on the very first date. I value intelligence and creativity. My undergraduate and graduate degrees are from ivy league schools, so I'm comfortable with intellectual types, but I'm not hung up on academic credentials or anything specific like that. Artists, scientists, and writers, are exciting, but I've had fascinating relationships with women from very different walks of life.
