My self-summary
Composer, teacher, singer, geek, builder of sandcastles, lover of stories.

I sometimes feel like music is my native language.

I respect creativity, imagination, kindness and those who live by the ideals they hold.

I'm an insatiable reader, a stubborn idealist, a loving introvert, and a shameless cat person.

Samwise Gamgee, Atticus Finch and Don Quixote are heroes of mine.

Singing in choirs, teaching my students, good food, and cuddling with my kitty are some of the best things in life.
What I’m doing with my life
Teaching music! It's intense and you never know what to expect on any given day. I love it.
I’m really good at
-empathizing: I'm determined to see the good in people and understand both sides of situations, sometimes to a frustrating degree.

-being a deeply loyal friend

- working with children

- Hopefully composing, singing and writing- either way, I know I couldn't stop doing any of them if I tried and I really value that creative outlet.

- giving hugs
The first things people usually notice about me
My voice. O_O "Whoa, you're an alto aren't you?"
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
BOOKS: Total bookworm here... special mentions to Good Omens, the Mistborn series, Les Miserables, Once and Future King, the Discworld series, Way of Kings (actually, anything by Brandon Sanderson or Neil Gaiman), Don Quixote, The City and the City, the Song of Ice and Fire series , Name of the Wind, Felix Castor books, Dresden Files, Sabriel, Alice in Wonderland of course... *wanders off to her bookshelf to grab another favorite, still listing amazing books she loves*

COMICS: Sandman, The Unwritten, Watchmen

MOVIES: Lord of the Rings, Mr. Holland's Opus, Amadeus, Star Wars, Dogma, Contact, The King's Speech, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, Casablanca, Miyazaki movies

SHOWS: Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: TNG, Orange is the New Black, Gravity Falls, Community, Doctor Who, West Wing, Modern Family, Game of Thrones, ER, Futurama, Face Off. Cheesy Food Network shows are my guilty pleasure.

PODCASTS: Serial, Welcome to Night Vale, This American Life.

MUSIC: My taste is insanely eclectic, and I'm always excited to learn about new music I haven't heard. Some of my current favorites are Vienna Teng, Ludo, Rush, Indigo Girls, R.E.M, Goo Goo Dolls, Mumford and Sons, and Imagine Dragons. I listen to a lot of soundtracks and musicals- Les Miz is my all time favorite, but I also love Hamilton, Last Five Years, Rent, Wicked, Candide, Next to Normal and anything by Sondheim.
There's also the part of my music collection that totally gives me away as a composer- some of my favorites and biggest influences are Berio, Barber, Vaughan Williams, Reich, Gubaidulina, Ligeti, Strauss and Mahler. I also have a huge soft spot for contemporary choral composers like Morten Lauridsen, Eric Whitacre, or Z. Randall Stroope.

FOOD: Curry! I love Thai and Indian, but Italian or sushi are also good anytime. Popcorn is also up there as a favorite treat.
Six things I could never do without
-my friends, family, students/fellow teachers, and my cat
-a sense of humor
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Work- I'm not someone who is good at leaving my job at school. I'm constantly thinking (obsessing?) about how my students are doing and how to help them. If something keeps me up at night, it's what is happening in my students' lives.

Music, especially its narrative properties. I almost always have a piece of music going through my mind and I have been known to get a few measures of a new piece in my head and go scrambling for paper, or start singing with very little provocation :-P

Ethical and moral questions and politics. It's not an area where I ever expect to find the answers, but looking for them and pondering them is very important to me.

My current projects, either the music I'm working on or the stories I'm writing.

Books or flights of imagination. I think entirely too much (a dangerous pasttime, I know.)
On a typical Friday night I am
Spending some low-key time with friends- maybe out grabbing dinner, maybe cooking a new recipe and watching a geeky movie on Netflix, maybe just catching up.

Lesson planning, playing with my kitty or taking some recovery time from the week.

I'm also very likely to be at my keyboard writing a piece, or curled up with a good book.

Or, of course, I have rehearsal :-P
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Superman is definitely my favorite superhero.
You should message me if
Go for it! I'm always happy to hear from new people. Especially if:

- You have a good book recommendation (the way to my heart is through my bookshelf.)
- You're looking for a mind at work.
- You caught the Disney reference in my profile.
- If we can have a great philosophical, geeky, or imaginative conversation, consider me swept off my feet :-)
