My self-summary
"What is a fear of living? It's being preeminently afraid of dying. It is not doing what you came here to do, out of timidity and spinelessness. The antidote is to take full responsibility for yourself - for the time you take up and the space you occupy. If you don't know what you're here to do, then just do some good." - Maya Angelou

Hardcore systems thinker. Ambitious nerd working towards world domination.

Growing up I was the kind of kid who found out you can only check out 40 books at a time from the library. In my brain is a constant tension between developing an accurate framework by which to judge what goes on around me while leaving my mind open to alternative interpretations. I can argue the merits of the opposite side of every opinion I hold.

All about the growth mindset. The hardest lesson I've learned in my late 20's is that growing one's capabilities as fast and as effectively as possible will beat out any short-term success. That's a long way of saying failing often is a good thing.
What I’m doing with my life
I work in the tech industry as a software engineer. If you use an iPhone, you use an app I've built. Now I work on an iOS SDK for a drone company. I'm in the middle of a multi-year career transition from mobile development to ML. My current project is a combination of low-level / concurrent systems development and big data.

Planning to start my own company leveraging ML to improve people's lives in some concrete way. I've started two other companies in the past, one in finance and one in manufacturing.

I started up a weight gain regimen last year. (I'm 155 right now, targeting 180) If you're into weight lifting I'm down to train together, especially if you got your deadlift technique down!

Learning everything I can about biology, neuroscience, and economics.

My secret dream is to become a champion boxer. My other one is to work in the Heath ceramics factory for a year.
I’m really good at
Being on time, nice saves, and I win Olympic Gold for overthinking. And walking. Seriously, I can walk for hours.
The first things people usually notice about me
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Rainer Maria Rilke, Douglas Coupland, Jelaluddin Rumi, Dune by Frank Herbert, Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. The Machine Stops by E.M. Forster. David Foster Wallace. I'm about to start Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami.

It's not a book I enjoyed reading, but 1984 by George Orwell has affected my politics.

I love to read about psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy of mind.

Collateral, American Beauty, True Grit, Matchstick Men, Minority Report, Insomnia, The Italian Job, My Blueberry Nights, The Pursuit of Happyness, Secret in their Eyes (Argentina), Inception, 2046 (Hong Kong), Ex Machina, and Whiplash.

Billions, Transparent, Mr. Robot, Homeland, Mad Men, House of Cards, The Mentalist, Seinfeld, and Workaholics.

Any kind of food. Except chicken.
The six things I could never do without
Family & friends, sunsets, good memories, a moleskine notebook, macadamia nuts, and Philz coffee.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
What will life be like in 20, 50, 100 years. What are humanity's existential risks. The market and how to use it intelligently to solve social ills. Will I ever get to go to Mars. (I really want to!) I'm a believer in economic freedom and technology.
On a typical Friday night I am
Either reading or out with friends talking about a book I've read. Preferably over some good food.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I never had a driver's license.

I walked into Urban Outfitters a few weekends back and actually liked their stuff.
You should message me if
I'm an ENTJ / ENTP with a really strong NT. If you love talking about something cool you've recently learned about then we'll get along great.

If you love the outdoors.

If you want to make something of your life.

If you believe in the growth mindset.

If you're an Anglophile like I am. Or if you're from the UK.

If you're that rare combination of a social liberal and a capitalist. Capitalist, not corporatist. Fuck the corporations. =)
