What I’m doing with my life
I live in a railroad apartment in a rapidly-gentrifying part of Bushwick with my guinea pigs Allegra and Claritin.

I work as a programmer and give talks about software, such as "class HotDog extends Sandwich" and "Our Programming Language Could Be Your Life". I also co-organize a meetup for people who write talks, which has ended up being something between ToastMasters and a writer's workshop.

I appear on a podcast called Karaoke Theory where we talk about why people feel so strongly about karaoke and we try to figure out its role in modern society.

Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I read a lot of technical books for work and my talks, but the books that affect me the most tend to be ones that are in adjacent but not directly related subjects: design, architecture, linguistics. A Pattern Language is probably the most influential in my life; when I moved to New York it was the only one I brought with me. More recently, I've really enjoyed How Buildings Learn and Surfaces & Essences. The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind is almost certainly full of shit, but its too weird and fascinating to ignore.

In that same vein, I got really into The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and immediately got rid of all my clothes that don't "spark joy." However I haven't yet been able to figure out how to shoehorn that into my philosophy of programming.

I tend to read a lot less fiction, and when I do its often short stories. I really dig Ted Chiang's stuff and I'm currently working on Ursula Le Guin's "The Compass Rose".

I was raised on MST3K and as a result I probably watch more bad movies than good ones. For example, Troll 2 is a terrible movie but I've watched and analyzed it more than any other. There's a really great hybrid of The Shining & The Stuff lurking inside that's calling out for a remake.

I don't watch a lot of tv, at least compared to modern "binge-watching" standards. I've just started watching Stranger Things but I'm worried that by the time I've finished it everyone else will have already moved on months ago. Adventure Time is the only serial show that I reliably keep up with.

I mostly watch reality-style gameshows like RuPaul's Drag Race & Top Chef, though lately I've come to appreciate Great British Bake-Off for how gentle and low-stakes it is compared to American TV.

I listen to a lot of cheesy music. My mom was a punk in the 80s and raised me on The Clash; in my teenage rebellion I got really into Steely Dan. I spent the better part of my 20s working at Walgreens and I got really into the 70s/80s soft rock I would hear all day. Its hard to talk about how much I love Phil Collins without accidentally quoting American Psycho.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
I have a whole wall festooned with post-its with fragments of ideas on them. Some of the more evocative ones are:
"the freedom to change the problem"
"empathy for the past"
"wave/particle duality of identity/data"

My current project is about the ideas around procedural art and comparing stuff like Sol LeWitt's wall drawings to Google's DeepDream, and about how both of those blur the lines between processes, tools, and collaborators.
On a typical Friday night I am
Friday tends to be an off night, oddly enough. My activities -- i.e. meetups, karaoke, etc. -- fall on weeknights; when I do go out on Friday night, it's low-key drinks or dinner with friends.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I spent a really long chunk of my life thinking I was going to be a rock star, and that everything else in my life was just a temporary distraction. It didn't seem to bother me that I wasn't particularly good at playing any instruments, nor did it occur to me that I should be playing shows. But now I spend a ton of time working on code, I'm constantly learning, and I've "performed" more conference and meetup talks than I ever played gigs.

The hardest part, though, has been admitting that my desire to make music, independent of any career goals, is almost completely satisfied by karaoke.
