I'm a geek at heart. I'm a techie and love taking in pop culture, but my parents have instilled in me a great appreciation of traveling and the outdoors. I like to think I'm a pretty nice guy, but I have a very biting and sarcastic sense of humor to me. I'm a Philadelphia sports fan, but I'm also one of the more satirical sports fans you will ever met. I have a great appreciation for the arts but sadly not the talent to equal it. I don't drink all that often, but when I do whiskey and craft beer is my drink of choice. Curiosity drives me, and I'm always up for trying to figure out how to do something I've never done before. Right now I'm an NSO for a roller derby league, and I'm learning to skate. I need to devote more time for that. I'm starting to get back into running after a bit of a break from it. My time in San Francisco has made me killer at running up hills.
So, I have an amazingly wonderful lady in my life, mycargoesboom. I am definitely available for fun dates, but I want to be upfront about being in a relationship from the start. More than anything, I am just looking to meet awesome new friends and people to be active with in the area, whether it be platonic or date-like.
I'm big on sex-positivity, body-positivity, and feminism.
I have a passion for education, technology, digital media and media literacy, and a few of my side endeavors currently focus on that.
I also have a ton of hobbies that I never have time to really keep up with (beyond roller derby, which is the dominating hobby), like traveling, photography, writing, Rock Band, Dance Central on the Kinect, Quizzo, writing, card and board games, film, exploring new places, German, etc.
a) Currently reading - The Disappearing Spoon by Sam Kean, which has been very engaging and interesting.
Recent reads - Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me by Mindy Kaling, The Serpent of Venice by Christopher Moore, Sand by Hugh Howey, The Shining and then Doctor Sleep by Stephen King, Room by Emma Donohue, the Divergent series.
Favorite authors: Christopher Moore, Hugh Howey, Stephen King, early Chuck Palahniuk, Check Klosterman
I clearly need to read more lady authors, so please send me your suggestions!
b) Garden State, Obvious Child, The LEGO Movie, Dr. Strangelove (I'm a big Kubrick fan), Donnie Darko, Up, The Dark Knight, Die Hard, Wall-E, Up, The Incredibles, Dark City, Iron Man, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Office Space, Playing By Heart, The Legend of 1900, Secretary, and I have a special appreciation for Doomsday.
c) Parks and Rec, Orphan Black, The Mindy Project, Banshee (total guilty pleasure), The Good Wife, Transparent, GoT, Arrested Development, The Wire, The Office, 30 Rock, Doctor Who, Firefly, Burn Notice, Psych, Flight of the Conchords, Dexter, Torchwood, True Blood, Lie to Me, House, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and a bunch more that are sadly no longer on the air.
d) Going to shows is a major passion of mine, so let's go with bands that I have seen shows in the last year and a half or so: MisterWives, Genevieve (solo now after Company of Thieves), The Airbourne Toxic Event, Beirut, Fitz and the Tantrums, Florence + the Machine, Mumford and Sons, Of Monsters and Men, Alabama Shakes, Bon Iver, Laura Marling and Johnny Flynn, Ingrid Michaelson, Walk the Moon, the Gaslight Anthem, Passion Pit, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, The Killers, the Lumineers, Grouplove, Bastille.
e) I eat an unhealthy amount of cheese and potato dishes, but hopefully my recent running resurgence will help combat that. I love a good Tapas place, which is one of the reasons I also love Philly. Another big reason is my love of good craft beer.
f) I wanted to add a podcast section; please share any of your favorites! The Savage Lovecast, This American Life, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, Radio Lab, The Smartest Man in the World, Serial, 99% Invisible, Song Exploder, and the nerdy side of me loves The Adventure Zone. I just discovered "The Heart" and it is pretty fantastic. Also, I have recently been binge listening to The Thrilling Adventure Hour: Beyond Belief, and I am not looking forward to when I run out of new episodes.
I'm also always curious as to when Okcupid suggests that someone is like an 85% match but only a 40% friend match. Generally speaking, if I am going to date someone, I have to like spending time with them too. Does the computer think that we are so physically compatible that it'd make up for how awfully it otherwise thinks we'd get along?
Mallory Ortberg is my spirit animal.
Mostly I am just looking for awesome new people who are genuine, passionate about something (especially if you will teach me about it), open-minded, equality-minded and sex-positive. Also, you shouldn't mind a hyphen here or there.
Bonus points if you appreciate the absolute brilliant that is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak0fPHbFpbc
Finally, if you wanna start a group that goes to German beer halls throughout the city and practices speaking German, let me know.
