My self-summary
Hello. Welcome to my profile and welcome to my world. Feel free to look around. And if long blocks of text and lists turn you off, just miss bits out. No worries.

Everything I say about myself is true....... except for the bits that are.... mmm.... exaggerated or creative.

I am: passionate, reliable, tolerant, solvent and heaps and heaps of fun.

I am relaxed, tolerant and gifted, oh, and edible.

I have been very busy recently starting up a new business but I still take holidays very seriously. I am off the Madeira soon and later, in September, I'm planning to go to Paris and from there on to th Med coast by car.

I like: swimming, cinema, theatre, music, art, books, my computer, my website, broadband, walking, driving, pubs, cleaning the bathroom.

I dislike: hypocrisy, violence, racism, so-called political correctness, U2.

Some Favourite Quotations:

"Always forgive your enemies. It's what annoys them most." Oscar Wilde.

I am not young enough to know everything. Oscar Wilde

See the losers in the best bars. Meet the winners in the dives. Neil Young

Weasels ripped my flesh. Frank Zappa

Just to be serious for a minute - a minute is about as much as I can manage - the quotations I would recommend to you, the ones which mean most to me are these:
1. What do you do when you fall far from help?
We wait till we can get up. Then we go on.... and on.
Samuel Becket
2. If you tremble indignation at every injustice then you are
a comrade of mine.
Ernesto "Che" Guevara

And now in Aberdeen Doric:

Flyke min? Hae'in mince i nicht? Ony quines oot 'ere that ken foo ti mak rowies? Lang may yer lum rik.

And in French:

Esk il faut vraiment faire ceci? J'en ai déjà marre et j'ai envie de dormir. Oh, OK.

And in Latin:

Eheu!! O me miserum!!

O fons Bandusiae, splendidior uitro, dulci digne mero, non sine floribus, cras donaberis haedo, cui frons turgida cornibus primis et uenerem et proelia destinat.

Caesar et erat forte.
Brutus ad sum iam.
Caesar sic in omnibus.
Brutus sic in tram.

Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace. Actually, I like that better in the King James Bible English translation: Now, Lord, lettest thou thy servant depart in peace...... It has a sort of ring to it, even to a heathen like me.

And In Mandarin Chinese:

Ni hao. Wode minzi jiao Alan. Wo xuexi Zhongwen. Wo hui shuo Zhongwen hen hao. Wo you Zhongguo de fangzi. Wo zhao congming qizi ba. Women shi gaoxing yiqi. Nimen song dianzi youjian zui wo ba. Xiexie, wode pengyoumen!

What I’m doing with my life
I have spent most of my life in public service of one kind or another. Since I have become a person of independent means, I have thrown myself into voluntary work. It makes me feel I'm still contributing to civilization, such as it is.

I spend a lot of my time swimming and hanging out with my mates down the pub or sitting in front of this screen. Lately, I have been much occupied teaching myself web design. I write a bit too: poetry, short stories and stuff but most of it's crap even though some of it is published.
The first things people usually notice about me
My beautiful feet.
Mes beaux pieds.
Pedes mirabliles mei.
Sans oublier mes chaussettes roses.

Six things I could never do without
1.Love and affection 2.Music. 3.Broadband 4.My Pinball Machine 5.A convivial pub 6.Nice neighbours
I spend a lot of time thinking about
1. Getting up.

2. The sound of sun-warmed breezes whistling through the twisted, dried up limbs of a single, long-dead tree which cracks a desert plain stretching tens of miles, flat and buff, till broken by the jagged line of distant mountain ranges as horizon.

3. Earwax.
On a typical Friday night I am
In the pub, setting the world to rights.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I'm the King of Bongo Bong.
You should message me if would like to share my leftover wine.
