My self-summary
Well educated, low-maintenance, rather bookish and an insatiable conversationalist. Always a sucker for a suit and tie. Looking for wit and brains; ornamental is important too. Have a soft spot for slightly goofy, nerdy types. Stylish glasses make me melt.

I can have a long conversation on almost any topic. I try an see as many performances as I can (when I'm not working on one of my own pieces). Love going to the opera and the theater. I compose and direct musical musical theater and opera.

I spend way too much money on books and have nowhere to put them (damn New York apartments). Other than that, I'm not really into material possessions, laptop excepted. Also looking for a bridge partner.

I am intellectual, curious, and passionate
What I’m doing with my life
Working in the arts. Also do freelance communications/corporate documentary. Been working a lot in Africa lately. Enjoying New York. It's sometimes difficult to do both, but I do what I can.
I’m really good at
Conversation; cooking (All-Clad man myself, but I cook well with Calphalon boiz).

I'm good at my work and am always seeking new projects and challenges.
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm very precise, somewhat formal, with a dry sense of humor.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Marius the Epicurean (no, seriously). My favorite authors are Shakespeare and Beckett. Also love Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. I read a lot of non-fiction, particularly history and some philosophy (wish I had a second lifetime to study Kant and Schopenhauer).

Into Baroque and 20th century music. Bach is a touchstone. I'm strongly influenced by Stravinsky and Britten. Other composers are far too numerous to mention, but I have a penchant for the very old or the very new; not much into the 19th century (Brahms is an exception). My favorite opera is Pelléas et Mélisande.

My favorite directors are Simon McBurney and Robert Lepage (although I've been disappointed with his recent work at the Met).

Love cooking and dining out. Will eat just about anything if it's well prepared. It's hard to have a proper dinner party in the city; I just don't have the space for it.
Six things I could never do without
1. a good chef's knife; 2. passport; 3. single-malt (everything is better with scotch); 4. my Macbook Pro; 5. iPhone; 6. a tuxedo.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Art and society. American culture and politics. Class, ethnicity and geography as they relate to life in America and New York.

I'm fascinated by cities and love wandering aimlessly around New York or London.

How to make a living in the arts in America.
On a typical Friday night I am
Seeing a performance of some sort: opera, theater, concert. Possibly dinner with friends. Although sometimes I'm so exhausted I just come home and crash. I actually prefer going out on weeknights because it's less crowded.
You should message me if
You're a gentleman scholar looking for the same. I'm sucker for slightly nerdy guys with glasses.
