My self-summary
I keep rewriting this... perhaps looking for the right words to show-not-tell a bit about myself. Or maybe It's that I've been rewriting myself and these blurbs are only accurate for a little while... ?

To whit - Two years ago this month I was settling into the realization that I needed to quit my job with nothing lined up to replace it, and that this was the right thing to do.

Jump forward two months and I'm driving off, everything in storage except clothes for a couple weeks and my camping gear.

Fast forward to a year ago and I've sold the car, put the camping gear into storage, and embarked on a year-long 'round the world trip with a unruly gaggle of similarly adventurous folks. The plan was to start my own company and shift the focus of my career toward that.

And now - well, the travels are done for the nonce, the startup is shut down, and I find myself landed here in New Orleans! It's like the first day at a new school - full of potential new friends, experiences, and learning. Do tell - what's your name and which kind of frosting do you prefer on your cake?
What I’m doing with my life
Coming off the end of nearly 2 years of travel I've realized what's truly important to me. Work needs to be on projects I want to work on. Relationships need to be with someone to whom I can be my real, complete, uncensored self. Life is full of happenstance and chaos, but every decision, every occurrence, is a chance to find a way to make the world a little better.

And dogs. Dogs are awesome and I need one in my life again.
I’m really good at
Embracing the fact that life is change and unless you challenge yourself every day, you're not living.
My job.
Being the awesome uncle.
Scrambled eggs. For reals.
The first things people usually notice about me
I have no idea... perhaps my eyes or hair? I've never polled many people on that.

Or does it mean personality-wise? I get a lot of people saying they're impressed with the breadth of topics I can talk semi-intelligently on. So... that seems like something people notice.

And I've had more than a couple people point out something along the lines of "snarky/sarcastic, but tells it like I sees it".

So, there's that.

(Is that snark? ;) )
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I'm fond of the masters of sci-fi (Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein, Herbert), but I'm starting to find them more and more dated. I absolutely loved Crime and Punishment - a dense, frenetic work. Tolkien... ah yeah, read his stuff many times. But I'm down for giving most anything a try.

Movies I flip between eye-candy summer blockbuster stupidity (turn the brain off and watch stuff go boom!) and watching the Oscar nominees. Though to be honest I don't watch as many movies as I used to. I went on a Kubrick kick (that's a fun alliteration) a few years back. Since then I've seen maybe a dozen films?

Shows - House of Cards, Game Of Thrones, Sons of Anarchy (huh... noticing a pattern in the naming here). Futurama, Star Trek (ToS is "my" trek, but I enjoy most all of it as good, goofy fun), anything David Attenborough narrates. Mythbusters! Farscape. Most cooking shows where they actually teach you how to cook something.

Music! Ah... that's all over the map. Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Rush, Dream Theatre, Megadeth, Gojira, Transglobal Underground,Tengir-too, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Satchmo, Herbie Man, Perturbator, and about a hundred more.

Foodstuffs... I'd call myself a foodie except I don't like the somewhat exclusionist connotation that brings. I like a kraft singles grilled cheese with raspberry jam as much as Alice Water's Chez Panis, PB&J as much as the home cooked curry my friend Anand's wife makes.
The six things I could never do without
New ideas, people that make me think, a stove, wine, music, some problem or another to try and figure out. Getting out. Staying in. Touch. Counting to 6 and not stopping there...
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Why people do the things they do. Random puzzles - what are the odds of finding duplicate characters on a license plate? How best to not lose one's keys. How to navigate this life in a humane and moral way. What exactly is souffle? Why do the proportions of radio isotopes start at set amounts that we can use to date really old things? Why is it good to have some "awe", but not good to be full of it? How is my own thinking messing me up, and how can I change the way I think about things?
On a typical Friday night I am
... trying to figure out what a typical Friday night is. My schedule the last couple years has been ... very fluid. It's returning to something more mainstream-normal, though, so likely I'll go back to enjoying time at home or heading out for dinner with friends.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I once lied about the most private thing I was willing to admit in an online form...
You should message me if
You're curious. About me, about the world. You've thought geeks were cool since before it was cool to think anything was cool before everyone else.

You parsed that sentence.
You don't mind that I use words like "parse" in normal parlance.
