My self-summary
So difficult to encapsulate one's self. I like Spanish guitar music at dusk. Photography at dawn when the light is the best. And exploring everything around me in between.... preferably on foot or on bikes. While I can be exceptionally talkative if need be, the ultimate objective is that sublime harmony that requires little discussion -- just a whimsical economy of smiles. There is nothing sweeter in Life than that. I'm intensely athletic more as a philosophy rather than a necessity....a committed gym aficionado who can happily envision becoming a fanatic. I love old jeeps and Victorian houses, and well...perhaps most importantly, in an increasingly alienated society, I have maintained my childlike desire to re-write reality to service our imagination (rather than vice-versa). That being said, I greatly value open minds as opposed to those which are constipated with 'us-them' ideologies that require blanket condemnations of whole groups of people that have never been met (if that were possible). Such thinking, whether based in theology, politics, or genetics, is repugnant, and is indicative of a lazy mind and a cowardly disposition. If you think you march behind such a banner, its probably best that you spare us both the mutual discomfort of association, for there is a surplus of beer-soaked simpletons stumbling about out there with equivalent charms for you to select from. I suppose in stating this, the only 'us-them' binary I'll respect is the open mind versus the closed one. I'm getting too old to continuously revisit the false certainties of presumed virtues that so tragically shape history. Additionally........I love bumper cars. Magnificent. If you're frustrated, bumper cars are cathartic. If you're upset, bumper cars are a tonic. If you're happy, bumper cars celebrate the moment. If you're with a hater, bumper cars provide a socially acceptable target to register your protest. They themselves solve nothing per se, but they make all things 'better'.
What I’m doing with my life
I write, I teach, and I travel, preferably in good company, at a casual pace, and in good humor.
I’m really good at
...planning all my rash moments, and the ones I don't plan, I postpone in favor of spontaneity.
The first things people usually notice about me that I have spotted their sudden anxiety. :)
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Book: Barbara Tuchman -- "A Distant Mirror"
Movies: Mike Leigh -- "Naked"; Cinema Paradiso; Bladerunner
Food: Pistachios
The six things I could never do without
1) Hope. Hope to feel plenitude. Little else is worthy of it.
2) Vigorous Exercise (both weightlifting and cardio on a daily basis). Not purely to serve vanity.....but as a means to stay in contact with life and youthful mindlessness...not to mention good preparation to walk foreign cities and climb mountains to get the best photographs.
3) Natural landscape. The only place that the numinous can be consistently tapped.
4) My cameras and film critique.
5-6) Casually chucked them.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
...tortilla de patata with some almond-flavored Indian naan.
On a typical Friday night I am
...roughly south of the North Pole.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit that fashion bubbliness and bumper-sticker optimism is off-putting. The authentic brand of both is all the more enjoyable when it spontaneously emerges from depth and mutual harmony, and was never considered a practical policy or a moral statement. I've unmasked the most pernicious and squalid creatures writhing about up under these 'popcorn and silly-string' facades.
You should message me if
.......your vitality is still important to you...especially in terms of moving about in the world. Exercising. Or...irrespective of all that, you just happen to be a fan of all things photography.
