What I’m doing with my life
Currently I serve as a local nerd-lord in Cambridge, organizing traditional (card, board, etc) gaming events professionally. I love doing it; I remember growing up and having nowhere to gather to play nerd games, so I love being able to provide that. In the longer-term, I love New England and would prefer to stay in the Boston area, but might need to switch jobs someday for better pay. If I do, I plan to try to stay in a similar industry - either organizing things I care about, or working with games and other such things. I joke about being old, but feel like I'm still young enough that I don't need a meticulous road-map - especially since I find reality likes to ruin those.
I’m really good at
I'm lucky enough to be good at the things I enjoy: playing and designing games, writing, thinking, leadership, and empathy.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I read intermittently but broadly, my most-read genres being fantasy, history, and politics. My favorite book ever is certainly the Lord of the Rings. I recently read and enjoyed 1491: New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus and Blood of Tyrants. My favorite history books are probably Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World and Ornament of the World, though I have more trouble picking those since I reread them less frequently.
My favorite movies are Pleasantville and Love Actually. I also have been known to enjoy relatively silly blockbusters if well done; I liked pretty much all the recent Marvel ones, and Pacific Rim. I have an ancient and abiding love for Empire Records.
My friends say I have the musical taste of a teenage girl, which I sadly often can't really dispute, but I also rarely find new music anymore as I now commute by bike and so don't listen to the radio. Recent favorites are Little Boots' Remedy, most of The Killers, and I Will Wait.
I similarly don't watch a ton of TV, but will usually encounter a show I like and then binge through it. The most recent show I fell in love with was Elementary. I also really enjoy Friday Night Lights, West Wing, Avatar: the Last Airbender, and Babylon 5. I also have an inexplicable addiction to MTV's Teen Wolf, which is currently the only show I catch weekly, though when Elementary starts again I will do the same with it.
For food: I have a significantly higher taste bud density than average, a condition sometimes called being a "supertaster", which makes it sound like an awesome superpower. Unfortunately what it actually does is make me sensitive and thus make it difficult for me to enjoy most strong foods. As a result I enjoy raw fruits and vegetables and other simple foods with few components. I can generally find something to eat at restaurants, though, and certainly don't mind trying a new place and seeing what I can do, and certainly don't mind people enjoying foods I don't and talking about how awesome they are!
I spend a lot of time thinking about
My most frequent active intellectual pursuits are reading, and designing games, both of which I enjoy and do in bursts. I also don't deal well with idleness, so often find myself pondering whatever comes to mind in slow moments - most frequently philosophy, politics, or history. I think constantly and effectively in the shower.
On a typical Friday night I am
I work Friday nights hosting the Friday Night Magic event at my store, so my typical Friday night finds me making sure all of our players are having a great time and everything is running smoothly. FNM is our biggest event by far, usually near a hundred people over two events, so it's a busy night for me!
