My self-summary
Engaging in playful banter with those around me i. e. family, friends, restaurant staff, bored OkCupid browsers, etc. makes life so much more fun for me. Those who know me casually think I'm a playful, and amusing guy - and yes, I can be that in some situations. Those who know me well however, will tell you I can also be quiet and introspective - and that's true at times too.

I really am 58 years old, I got a divorce about three years ago, after a very long marriage, and I have no children. I remained good friends with my ex-wife until she passed away two years ago. I'm fortunate to be able to mostly work from home (which is great!), and I've been self-employed almost my entire adult life. I miss being in a long-term relationship, except for with my cat (Bonnie), and as talented as she is, she just doesn't get my sense of humor. All she does is give me this look like: 'You talking to me? Well, I don't see anyone else around here.' Purred with a Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver accent. Yeah, I know, she's got big-time feline acting chops. Now if I could just get her to improve a little on her singing and dancing skills, she would be a triple-threat.

I'm an avid tennis fan, but I don't watch or follow any other sports, or play video games. I would love to find a hiking partner to explore the various local hiking trails with. By myself, I can go days without turning on the TV, but I would very much enjoy sitting by someone's side and watching shows or movies or whatever. You could probably get me to do about anything by dangling the appropriate carrot (men are sooo easy in that regard; it's really appalling!). Me: "So, what would you like to do today, Baby Cakes?" (I don't really use the term 'Baby Cakes' but it seems to work here.) You: "Let's go spend the entire day shoe shopping, and then later..." Trust me, I'll soon be headed out the door, car keys in hand, a smile of anticipation on my naive face.
What I’m doing with my life
Just finishing the rough-draft of a manuscript; an amusing and witty work of fiction - or so I'm told by those I pay regularly. I'm currently sculpting a 24" Vitruvian Man (Leonardo da Vinci drawing with four arms and four legs). I'm also interested in using polymer clay to replicate the form and bright colors used in large blown glass vases (blowing glass is a former hobby of mine). I create digital artwork, using Photoshop with a pressure-sensitive Wacom drawing tablet and a 30" monitor. Oh, and I love creating artful home accessories and furnishings (functional art) - though a number of years ago I 'lost' most of my major pieces - sad story, best explained later.
I’m really good at
I'm a creative kind of guy, so in art and design areas, I pretty much shine. Anything athletic has always been very easy for me to excel at. I'm a Jack-Of-All-Trades and can handle most common tasks quite easily. Whether it's configuring the latest electronic gadget, reformatting a computer, or making minor household repairs. And of course, if I don't quite know what I'm suppose to do, well, I'm probably going to try and just fake it in front of you and hope for the best - it's a guy thing.
The first things people usually notice about me
I seem to smile at people quite easily, and I don't even realize I'm doing it. I may be out shopping, lost in thought, and as someone approaches me, I see them smile at me, and I realize 'oh, I must be smiling again.' It's kind of nice really, a silent bit of pleasant communication between two strangers.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I love business biographies, and have read extensively about most of the established tech companies, and their founders. However, I enjoy feeding my spiritual side too and just recently finished Soul Survivor: The Reincarnation of a World War II Fighter Pilot. A completely fascinating read!

I also really enjoy watching 'The Great Courses' DVDs. Have you seen these? They are fabulous! The Roman Empire, Great Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, and Great Artists Of The Italian Renaissance, are some of the ones I've watched recently - so many great courses, so little time!

My all-time favorite movie is Good Will Hunting. I thought Fight Club was amazing! Shawshank Redemption was sooo good too! An older big-time favorite is The Graduate (Ben: "No, it's not. It's completely baked.") I'm a Drama fan, but I'm not a black & white classics kind of guy. Should I admit I like romantic comedies? I do. My least favorite genre would be Fantasy, Science Fiction is good - Foreign films, not so much.
Six things I could never do without
Besides all the (really) important stuff i.e. family, friends, love, happiness...yada, yada, yada:

... Art. I love being surrounded by beautiful pieces, whether I'm creating them, arranging them, or buying them.

... Music. Especially while I'm out hiking in nature, I never wear ear buds. I prefer to hang my phone on a lanyard (around my neck) and I enjoy the tonal quality of the small speaker when it's close to my ears like that.

... The Gym. Love doing cardio on the elliptical (daily), and hitting the weight machines, but I'm not into the "free weights" mentality.

... Smart phone. Mine's an iPhone and I would feel completely less-than-smart without it.

... 30" monitor. Size matters! Hooked up to my MacBook Air with a bluetooth keyboard & touchpad and I'm happily good-to-go.

... Hiking. My favorite adage is: "Think Outside - No Box Required." Plus, I find that hiking enables me to turn off my over-active brain, and just be in-the-moment.
On a typical Friday night I am
My days (and nights) all seem to blend together, probably because I'm self-employed and work from home. I don't really focus on what day it is, or even what time it is. An exception to that is I'm always aware that the (Golden Eagle) access gate to hike the Pleasanton Ridge closes at 6:30 PM. My iPhone alarm reminds me at 6:00 and I then decide: Am I going hiking tonight?
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Don't know why, but I don't have any gray hair. Very odd at my age, I know. I have been asked before if I "color" my hair...which makes me a little self-conscious about it now. I could start adding some gray coloring, I guess? Maybe I could get that 'distinguished' look going? Hmm. Probably not.
You should message me if
You should message me if: You want to earn a Gold Star! Yes, it's really that simple. Wow, what a great reward, huh? Plus, you also get the awesome feeling of courageous accomplishment! (I love that feeling!)

Hmm, too much pressure? Can't think of what to say? No 'problemo' - just rate my profile 4 or 5 stars and OkCupid will (not-so-slyly) send me an email letting me know...and I'll do the rest. For that, you will earn a Silver Star for 'Bravery' (of course, duh).

Who knew contacting a potential life-partner could be soooo much fun? And rewarding too, because I don't just give out crappy "Bonus Points" - I give out Stars!!! (that's just the way I roll....)
