This is my first year in Berkeley after spending eleven in Boston studying probability and artificial intelligence at MIT. (I just attended my first Bay to Breakers, where it really sunk in how much I've fallen in love with this area!) Now I'm running a tech startup with my friends, trying to use those skills to reinvent computing from the ground up, hopefully helping to cure a few diseases and make some shiny gadgets along the way.
I love to cook intricate meals (with bonus points for specialized gadgets!) I'm a fan of nerdy pastimes -- German-style board games a la Dominion/Settlers of Catan/Puerto Rico, video games (the quirkier the better: I'll take Portal or Katamari Damacy over Halo or Madden 20X6 any day, though Rock Band definitely has its place), and puzzles & wordplay (e.g. cryptic crosswords, MIT Mystery Hunt). When I'm not geeking out, I try to stay active: I regularly run and hike in Tilden park, bike through the Berkeley hills, surf the Marin headlands, ski Tahoe, and do yoga in my bedroom. I've also been known to go sailing, indoor rock climbing, to learn how to blow glass or play in a Balinese percussion orchestra, to go berry-picking in the summer, apple-picking in the fall, or snowball-fight-picking in the winter. I would love to spend more time traveling to exciting places, enjoying live music and unusual shows (I once got to experience Willy Wonka in Smell-o-Vision -- more like this, please!), and discovering the hidden secrets of the Bay.
I'm looking for people who will revel in life -- who can find the humor in everyday situations, who appreciate the first signs of the changing of the seasons, who love to concoct crazy schemes, and occasionally even see them through. I'm looking for people who agree that extended puns are an underappreciated art form (bawdiness optional, but encouraged). I'm looking for people who can be candid and empathetic at the same time, who are responsibly young in spirit. Are you too?
And since there aren't slots for these things over in the My Details section: I'm in a poly (non-monagamous) relationship: a stable triad that is expecting our first child this summer. Fortunately, three parents means I'll still have time for dating, in whatever form seems natural (including being open to the possibility of building co-primary/non-hierarchical relationships). Also, I identify as bi, but my experience is mostly with ladies. Guys are welcome to woo me, but you're going to need a lot more grace than a wink or a "hey"!
I am unabashedly nerdy, punny, and a lifelong explorer
Movies: Coen Brothers films, Miyazaki films, Pixar films (except Cars!), Serenity, Real Genius, Spaceballs, Monty Python, MST3K, Lord of the Rings, Princess Bride. I'm also a sucker for good heist films.
Music: Air, Andrew Bird, Animal Collective, Beastie Boys, Ben Folds, Broken Social Scene, Cake, Daft Punk, Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists, The Flaming Lips, The Glitch Mob, Jonathan Coulton, The Knife, MC Frontalot, Mika, Mogwai, Passion Pit, The Postal Service, Ratatat, Royksopp, Stars, Sufjan Stevens, Vitalic, Yoko Kanno
Webcomics: Hyperbole and a Half (which may only be read when it's socially acceptable to laugh to the point of tears!), Questionable Content, XKCD, Penny Arcade, Toothpaste for Dinner, Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal
Podcasts: This American Life, The Bugle, Escape Pod, PodCastle, Paul and Storm podcast, Savage Lovecast
TV, which I really prefer to keep this to a minimum, but things I occasionally enjoy include: Venture Brothers, Daily Show, 30 Rock, Ace of Cakes, The Office, Joss Whedon shows, News Radio, Rurouni Kenshin, Monk, Psych, Stargate (all of them)
Food: I'm mostly pescetarian (vegetarian + fish/seafood) -- other than that, I'm up for just about anything except sesame and olives (Update: I've learned to kind of enjoy olives, and to tolerate some sesame! woohoo!). Spicy = Awesome; Extra Spicy = Extra Awesome! (though I haven't been getting much practice lately -- my tolerance may have regressed!) I'm a big fan of fruit finding its way into meals, and will take dark chocolate over milk any day.
Really, I'm pretty open: if you're willing to ask, I'm probably willing to tell (unless it's not my info to tell)
