    People who have privilege rarely know they have it. It just seems normal to them and comes naturally. People who are disadvantaged, however, are usually painfully aware of what they lack.


    America is often called a "Land of Opportunity", but the American dream of upward social mobility is more a myth than a reality. The vast majority of people will not rise above their parents' station in society, and the gap between the rich and poor has been widening rapidly in recent decades.


    Common markers of privilege are whiteness, maleness, and wealth. These are highly correlated with quality of life, and if you don't have them, you may be no better off than a person in a Third World country. What are your life chances really like?
